Days 21-22: Spoiled rotten in Nebraska

Three years ago we celebrated our anniversary at a bed and breakfast in Lincoln, Nebraska, while driving east across the country, and this time we decided to repeat the tradition for our 5th anniversary. (Already??) The Atwood House B&B is wonderful (shout-out for anyone in the Lincoln area) and an incredible deal. For $85/night we got a suite with a sitting area and bathroom large enough to accommodate William's portable crib (I know we're not the only parents who make our baby sleep in the bathroom while traveling), all the DVDs, popcorn, and assorted other junk food we could consume (we must be feeling our age because we went lighter on the junk food this time than last time), and the amazing breakfast below, served to us in our room. The place is run by the nicest couple and the whole experience felt like staying with some indulgent great-aunt who spoils you rotten, if your great-aunt lived in a huge turn of the century mansion stuffed with antiques.

This time we spent an afternoon in Omaha, a new city to me. Both Omaha and Lincoln have a lot of character: warm, friendly, interesting. The Old Market and Haymarket districts, respectively, are full of handsome old buildings housing art galleries, shops, and restaurants, along wide uncrowded streets made for walking.

We discovered this garden behind an art gallery:

The lemon saffron ice cream at this funky little ice cream parlor was almost good enough to make me consider moving to Omaha:

A future Huskers fan in the making (if his father has anything to do with it):

There's a big airplane museum between Omaha and Lincoln, which we had to visit as Joel is an airplane-head.

Captain Hook has been traveling with us every since he stowed away on our honeymoon, but we've been sadly remiss in giving him any photo ops this trip. Sorry, Captain Hook.

These friends were sooo excited to see William, who they claim as a grandson:

We celebrated our anniversary at this same restaurant (The Green Gateau) 3 years ago, and I notice one major difference between the picture taken that night and this picture. Who knows what changes there might be to our next family picture taken here?
